Just a little note to confirm that I have begun to write 'Larussi's Heartsong', which will complete the story arc of 'A Queen's Heart'. Although the main thrust of the plot was concluded in 'The Power of Four Queens', one thread was left hanging. Poor Larussi was left, bereft and alone, in the care of the Sisters of Mercy, her heart broken, wishing only for death. Her story has yet to run its course. This is why I have decided to call it the 'Appendix to A Queen's Heart' rather than Part Four., When completed, it will form a separate story in its own right, albeit one that sprang from the events in the trilogy.
So far, so good, but I will be truthful. 'Larussi's Heartsong' currently consists of one whole sentence - and I suspect that I may have to rewrite that, having looked again at it. Everything has to begin somewhere, though, and the first steps are usually faltering ones. I cannot think of a book that I have written where the opening went on sale exactly as I first wrote it. 'Chained in Time' had its first chapter entirely rewritten after I had finished the rest of the book. The reasoning for that was very simple. When a customer is browsing for a book to buy, he or she will read the first page or two, no more. If their interest is not engaged by that time, they won't even look at the rest of the book, let alone buy it. The author has, at best, just 500 words to persuade a potential customer to part with their cash. That is why the hardest page of any book to write is Page 1. If you don't get that right, it doesn't matter how good the rest of the work is, it will be a failure.
Fear not. Page 1 of 'Larussi's Heartsong' will be fine - as will the rest of the book. It is just a question of getting it right. All being well, it should be on sale before Christmas.
My new novel, 'Relapse', is all but ready. Line editing has gone more smoothly than it usually does (assisted, no doubt, by the fact that it is the Easter holiday and I don't have schoolwork to interfere). It goes to Cuzzie this morning so that she can cast her eagle eye over it and, hopefully, pronounce it fit for publication. If all goes well - and it should - it should be on sale by the end of next week.
'Relapse' is the third 'Rutter' book. It is set five months after the events depicted in 'Rutter's Reunion' and begins on the very day that Kevin Mallory is sentenced for his crimes. Dr. Alex Lawson has now moved in with Rutter. She and the newly-promoted Sergeant Cornish receive a cryptic letter on what is a very significant day, for more than one historical reason. That letter plunges the three of them into a new, and unexpected nightmare scenario.
While Cuzzie proofreads the manuscript, I will make a start on 'Larussi's Heartsong', the appendix to 'A Queen's Heart'
